At the age of 17, Luke Smith dreamed of making world-class wines in Canada. It took decades before he finally found a spot among the exceptional terroir of the Naramata Bench.
In 2004, Luke planted his favorite old world grapes—sauvignon blanc, sémillion, pinot noir, merlot, and petit verdot— on the Naramata Bench, recognized as one of the world’s best wine-growing regions.
From the very first vintage, Luke’s vision remains: Spend most of the year in the vineyard because great wines start there. Pay attention to all the small details. Grow naturally and listen carefully to what Mother Nature tells you. Pick by hand and make small lots of the best wines you can.
While down-to-earth and unpretentious, Howling Bluff has received Lieutenant Governor Award for Excellence in BC Wines (2009, 2011 2014 & 2017), the Canadian Red Wine of the Year (2010), and awarded a silver medal from the Decanter World Wine Awards (2015), deemed the world's largest and most influential wine competition.
The wineshop is open daily, May through October, 11 am to 5 pm. Please call ahead for tastings for groups of six or more. Light snacks, and Howling Bluff wines by the glass and bottle are available for sale on our newly opened, licensed lake-and-grapeview patio.
